This painting of an abandoned ’58 Chevy Apache 36, rotting outside the derelict Ranch House Café, just outside Tucumcari, New Mexico is taken from a series of photographs made in May 2014.

Even the most casual internet image search pulls up loads of photos of this decaying relic – it seems it’s almost a national monument on Route 66 and an irresistible subject for tourist/photographers.

Ah well, no apologies for being in the herd; I love Americana and I have hundreds of photos of the detritus of the automobile age that lines the roadsides of rural USA.

Tucumcari is a fascinating place, the main street through is part of Route 66 and is lined with historic buildings, including the Blue Swallow Motel and it resembles a Hollywood backlot more than a real city. It was great to visit as it is mentioned in a favourite Little Feat song, Willin’
