I travelled to New England recently, visiting, and staying in, all six states: Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
Unable to carry my oil painting easel, I refreshed my use of watercolours and took a small sketching set with me. Despite my best intentions, days of driving, sightseeing tours and other distractions cut down on my opportunities to sketch; however I did manage to do some rudimentary pictures:
“Motif number One” in Rockport, Massachusetts; a fisherman’s shed, so-called because of the number of times it has been painted by artists. Add me to the list.“Nubble Lighthouse”, Cape Neddick, Maine. In preparation for my trip, I had been practising watercolours and I painted this lighthouse twice from a photo. It was a great experience to actually visit it to paint it.“Portland Head Light”, Portland, Maine.“Bar Harbor, Maine”“Oddfellows Hall” Bartlett, New Hampshire“Emily’s Bridge” Stowe, Vermont. This is one of the many famous covered bridges of New England.“Misty Morning” (not frosty) Stowe, Vermont. Even though the weather was wonderful all the time I was there, when you’re in skiing country, the mornings can be a little cool if the sky’s been blue all day.
